Summary

Maeve’s strangely astute tarot readings make her the talk of the school, until a classmate draws a chilling and unfamiliar card—and then disappears。

After Maeve finds a pack of tarot cards while cleaning out a closet during her in-school suspension, she quickly becomes the most sought-after diviner at St。 Bernadette’s Catholic school。 But when Maeve’s ex–best friend, Lily, draws an unsettling card called The Housekeeper that Maeve has never seen before, the session devolves into a heated argument that ends with Maeve wishing aloud that Lily would disappear。 When Lily isn’t at school the next Monday, Maeve learns her ex-friend has vanished without a trace。

Shunned by her classmates and struggling to preserve a fledgling romance with Lily’s gender-fluid sibling, Roe, Maeve must dig deep into her connection with the cards to search for clues the police cannot find—even if they lead to the terrifying Housekeeper herself。 Set in an Irish town where the church’s tight hold has loosened and new freedoms are trying to take root, this sharply contemporary story is witty, gripping, and tinged with mysticism。

I really enjoyed this, I liked that the main character was flawed and I loved the LGBT rep。 I loved the diversity of the characters and I loved all the witchy influences。 The tarot themes were cool and the story line was definitely easy to get sucked into。 I really liked the semi fantasy type genre and it was a good change of pace。

Actual rating would be closer to 2。5 stars… this was in no way a /bad/ book, it just wasn’t for me and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped! My main issue I had with it was that it just read very juvenile。 The characters all read and acted far younger than they were supposed to be and I found both Maeve as a character and a narrator slightly annoying and immature。Had I read this book when I was 13/14 I probably would have loved it but now I’m older I prefer my YA to read more mature than this。Aga Actual rating would be closer to 2。5 stars… this was in no way a /bad/ book, it just wasn’t for me and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped! My main issue I had with it was that it just read very juvenile。 The characters all read and acted far younger than they were supposed to be and I found both Maeve as a character and a narrator slightly annoying and immature。Had I read this book when I was 13/14 I probably would have loved it but now I’m older I prefer my YA to read more mature than this。Again, not a bad book at all, in fact there was plenty in here that surprised me and kept me reading!! What an amazing read。 This gave me mad House of Hollow vibes, peak urban fantasy。 I loved the mystery element and I've never related to a character so hard。 In conclusion, I am Maeve and Maeve is me。Although I wouldn't necessarily classify this book as LGBTQ+ since that is not the main focus of the story, this book features a diverse range of characters in terms of sexuality, and does discuss topics of gender and sexuality in a way I felt was tasteful and accurate。 As someone who went through a What an amazing read。 This gave me mad House of Hollow vibes, peak urban fantasy。 I loved the mystery element and I've never related to a character so hard。 In conclusion, I am Maeve and Maeve is me。Although I wouldn't necessarily classify this book as LGBTQ+ since that is not the main focus of the story, this book features a diverse range of characters in terms of sexuality, and does discuss topics of gender and sexuality in a way I felt was tasteful and accurate。 As someone who went through a witch phase in middle school (and, let's face it, high school) I loved the witchy plot line, and these sixteen year olds visiting divination shops and trying to figure out how to work spells gave me major flashbacks to my teen years。I read this so fast and it grabbed me from start to finish。 10/10。 。。。more

Maeve Chambers doesn't have much going for her。 Not only does she feel like the sole idiot in a family of geniuses, she managed to drive away her best friend Lily a year ago。 But when she finds a pack of dusty old tarot cards at school, and begins to give scarily accurate readings to the girls in her class, she realizes she's found her gift at last。 Things are looking up – until she discovers a strange card in the deck that definitely shouldn't be there。 And two days after she convinces her ex-b Maeve Chambers doesn't have much going for her。 Not only does she feel like the sole idiot in a family of geniuses, she managed to drive away her best friend Lily a year ago。 But when she finds a pack of dusty old tarot cards at school, and begins to give scarily accurate readings to the girls in her class, she realizes she's found her gift at last。 Things are looking up – until she discovers a strange card in the deck that definitely shouldn't be there。 And two days after she convinces her ex-best friend to have a reading, Lily disappears。Can Maeve, her new friend Fiona and Lily's brother Roe find her? And will Maeve's new gift be enough to bring Lily back, before she's gone for good?I’m not a Young Adult by any means, but I loved this。 It brought back the intensity of my own nerdy teenage years trying to find out who I was and where I fitted in。 The plot weaves many subplots together that work perfectly。 The characters all brought something different to the story, they were three-dimensional, complex characters that all had their own issues and demons。 Magic is present throughout the book, but it is approached in a very real way including the dangers and consequences。The book is an enchantingly modern coming of age story, wrapped in a supernatural mystery, steeped in Irish folklore。 It speaks with an authentic young adult voice and is packed with relatable and refreshingly diverse characters。 Central protagonist Maeve is warts and all, far from perfect, but she echoes every teenager who just wants to fit it。 Her relationships with gender queer boyfriend Rory and best friend Fiona are grounded and adorable。 The backdrop of a present-day Ireland and all its myth, history, religious tensions, race, and gender inequalities really ground this novel and culturally reflects the call for change from our youth。All Our Hidden Gifts is the first book in a new series and I can’t wait to continue the teenager’s stories and see what life has to throw at them in book two。If you are a fan of young adult supernatural fiction, then All Our Hidden Gifts from Caroline O ‘Donoghue should be on your reading list。 。。。more

So maybe with the second book the entire story will be more "coherent" and it will all be smooth。 Either way, I absolutely enjoyed this book and if you are someone who likes witches and carot cards and some creepy content。。。 this is for you! 。。。more

I gave this guy 3 stars with the stipulation that I think its really meant for a younger reader - reading it as an adult is really a 2 star read。 Another reviewer mentioned that she felt while some of the topic discussed (LGBTQ+ phobia, hate crimes, sex) were quite adult - I actually felt that these were approached in a very after school special kind of way that is probably easy to digest as a 12-14 year old, but is a bit syrupy beyond that age。 Despite Maeve being 16, her voice felt extremely j I gave this guy 3 stars with the stipulation that I think its really meant for a younger reader - reading it as an adult is really a 2 star read。 Another reviewer mentioned that she felt while some of the topic discussed (LGBTQ+ phobia, hate crimes, sex) were quite adult - I actually felt that these were approached in a very after school special kind of way that is probably easy to digest as a 12-14 year old, but is a bit syrupy beyond that age。 Despite Maeve being 16, her voice felt extremely juvenile - again closer to that of an early teen。 It made her somewhat grating to read as an adult, as her solipsism became overwhelming and unlikeable as the book progresses。 As for the realms of magic etc in the book。。。I felt as though this has been done more artfully in other novels if more advanced readers are looking for something fun, readable and witchy (Libba Brays, 'Great and Terrible Beauty' comes to mind)。 All that being said I think a 12-14 year old might enjoy All Our Hidden Gifts。 。。。more

Unusual tales are so refreshing。 I have a tarot theme happening。。。wonderful to unveil our hidden gifts and equally so to explore all the other big, important and relevant themes this book has to offer。 Each decade has its challenges, yet I can’t help thinking that growing up in modern times seems more complicated than ever。 Raw emotions, grittiness, nice and real。

This was a fun, easy, fast-paced read。 It had an engaging story and I found the book difficult to put down。 Maeve was a very likeable character, and she was funny and brave and I liked how much responsibility she took for her wrong-doings。 The mystery surrounding Lily's vanishing was fun to read about and kept me guessing。 It took some turns I wasn't expecting and I never lost interest。 Something a bit different, I highly recommend! :) This was a fun, easy, fast-paced read。 It had an engaging story and I found the book difficult to put down。 Maeve was a very likeable character, and she was funny and brave and I liked how much responsibility she took for her wrong-doings。 The mystery surrounding Lily's vanishing was fun to read about and kept me guessing。 It took some turns I wasn't expecting and I never lost interest。 Something a bit different, I highly recommend! :) 。。。more

i adored this book so much the fantasy divinisation elements, contemporary references and LGBTQIA+ representation。 i loved each and every character and i must say roe was definitely my favourite。 the only reason I’m not rating this book 5 stars is because the ending felt quite inconclusive but other than that i really enjoyed it。

I read this book as a buddy read with two of my friends, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not so the buddy read was helpful。 I ended up loving it。 Maeve was a bit of a marmite character for me, her attitude sometimes annoyed me but on the whole I liked the dynamic she had with the other characters。 Overall I rated it 4 stars just due to my dislike for some of the characters, the book as a whole is fabulous!

I have to admit, this is exactly what I wanted House of Hollow to be。 Both have parallels, but this was much more what I expected (and wanted) for the trope of ‘girl goes missing and could be in a place nobody can reach her’。 Even though the trope was similar to others I’ve seen, this book was so unique in it’s premise and plot itself, which I loved。 It felt like such an oddity of YA, and breaches a gap between contemporary and magical realism, giving off a spooky feel。I really liked the atmosph I have to admit, this is exactly what I wanted House of Hollow to be。 Both have parallels, but this was much more what I expected (and wanted) for the trope of ‘girl goes missing and could be in a place nobody can reach her’。 Even though the trope was similar to others I’ve seen, this book was so unique in it’s premise and plot itself, which I loved。 It felt like such an oddity of YA, and breaches a gap between contemporary and magical realism, giving off a spooky feel。I really liked the atmosphere and felt it was portrayed really well。 I definitely had goosebumps in places and felt slightly spooked by the scenes in this book, which beautifully showed the thinning of the veil between our world and somewhere else。 I really enjoyed how much tarot played a part in the story and the fact it is set in the real world makes the story easy to follow。The characters were so diverse and I really liked the friendship dynamic。 I think my biggest struggle was sometimes how much I disliked the main character, Maeve, who occasionally felt very immature in her actions and the way she spoke to people around her。 Although she did grow throughout the book, I did sometimes struggle to like her character。 However, I loved the side characters and the way all of their stories intertwined and they all had different plots working alongside each other。 Each character had their own struggles and demons but they came together to fight as a team。One of the main characters spends this book exploring his gender identity, which I really enjoyed reading about and sparked some really interesting and important conversations between the characters。 The entire cast felt very diverse and it was great to see a non-binary side character, although I found the main character still presumed the genders of others, which felt a little backwards in places。 I did really like the romance, however, and seeing how the two characters communicated with one another and had a level of understanding I didn’t expect really warmed my heart。This book is set in Ireland, which I really liked。 It also felt like it played a key role in the story, including discussions of the Catholic Church but also the folklore of Ireland。 This brought out some really interesting and important topics that I definitely wasn’t expecting to come up。If you’re looking for a quirky and atmospheric creepy YA, I would really recommend this one。 I can see how this is only the first one in a series and I’m looking forward to seeing where Maeve’s story goes!★★★★4 out of 5 stars-BethMay your shelves forever overflow with books! ☽ 。。。more

That’s…another story。 But she’s only a teenager and I think due to her life circumstances she wanted to feel extraordinary or special but not in the way things worked out for her。I liked the world-building and the folklore of this novel。 The author not only incorporates lore and (Catholic) religion but also contemporary issues, and how even those things seem to be progressing but are yet still so stilted。 It felt like something one can relate to easily no matter where they live—how religion can hold back progress and continue to show backwards ideas。 Because of that, there just a really creepy vibe to this entire book that made it feel so realistic。 I do wish we knew just a bit more about the Housekeeper。 She feels a bit like she’s sitting on the fringes—viewable from the corner of your eyes and yet not wholly concrete。I wasn’t sure what to make of Lily or the reason behind Lily and Maeve’s falling out。 I can’t quite reconcile how Maeve treated Lily and vice versa toward the end of the book。 It’s obvious amends need to be made but now things are different for both of them。 I really liked both Fiona and Roe and how their respective relationships played out。While this didn’t end in a complete cliffhanger, the author definitely left room for a sequel and I wouldn’t mind reading it when it’s published。 。。。more
